Chateau Sassenage, a European group, came to New Mexico to grow wine grapes along the Rio Grande Valley. They selected some lands east of Elephant Butte Lake and planted their first vines in 1983. The exceptional attributes of New Mexico's climate and soil convinced them to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon Blanc, a Blush, a Chablis, and a sparkling wine called Mont-Jailon.
Top quality wines at reasonable prices include the gold medal winning Cabernet Sauvignon 86.
